Key Responsibilities

As a Driver based at a healthcare facility, you will perform the following key duties and responsibilities:

Patient Transport & Support

  • Safely transport patients and clients to and from medical facilities, ensuring timely arrival and departure.
  • Assist patients as needed during loading and unloading into the vehicle, with support from medical personnel.
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety throughout the journey, demonstrating compassion and professionalism.

Vehicle Maintenance & Safety

  • Conduct daily pre-shift inspections, including oil and water levels, tire pressure, brakes, and lights.
  • Report any mechanical issues immediately to the logistics department for timely repairs.
  • Solve minor technical vehicle problems where possible.
  • Ensure the ambulance/vehicle is clean and stocked with necessary medical supplies before and between trips.
  • Ensure the vehicle always has all valid documents, such as insurance, logbooks, and inspection certificates.
  • Maintain general cleanliness, good condition, and readiness of the vehicle at all times.
  • Report any accident or emergency situations promptly and accurately.

Administrative & Operational Support

  • Respect and adhere to the assigned work schedule, including responding promptly to emergency calls.
  • Complete and submit trip sheets and vehicle usage reports after each journey.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers or line managers about trip schedules, progress, or unforeseen delays.
  • Follow the hospital’s annual training plan and participate in required driver training sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital staff, including administrative and medical teams.
  • Maintain a professional image in both appearance and behavior when interacting with patients, coworkers, and external stakeholders.

 

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Educational Background:

  • Minimum of Ordinary Level Certificate (O-Level).
  • Advanced Level (A2) education is an added advantage.

Driving License:

  • Possession of a valid Category B driving license.

Experience:

  • No previous work experience is required, but any related experience in driving or healthcare support is an added benefit.

 

Required Competencies and Technical Skills

To be successful in this role, you must demonstrate the following:

  1. Resource Management Skills – Ability to use fuel, time, and other resources efficiently.
  2. Problem Solving Skills – Quickly assess and handle challenges, especially mechanical or logistical issues.
  3. Time Management – Punctuality, adherence to schedule, and efficient route planning.
  4. Risk Management Skills – Understanding and minimizing risks during transportation.
  5. Fluency in Kinyarwanda – Essential; proficiency in English and/or French is a significant advantage.
  6. Mechanical Knowledge – Basic understanding of vehicle mechanics and maintenance practices.
  7. Safety Awareness – Consistent application of road safety and hygiene protocols.
  8. Writing and Reading Skills – Ability to fill out logs, reports, and understand written instructions.
  9. Effective Communication – Clear communication with patients, dispatch, and hospital staff.

Ideal candidates will also display:

  • High attention and concentration levels while driving.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess vehicle conditions and road scenarios.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, especially in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Clear and effective communication to ensure accurate information flow.
  • A strong sense of responsibility, professionalism, and courtesy.
  • Readiness to work flexible hours or shifts including nights and weekends when necessary.
